Wilmslow Park

Wilmslow Park, a 1000+ bed accommodation
located in the heart of Manchester’s University
and student living epicentre, the building arrangement
set around a central courtyard and car park is in a prime
location on the Oxford / Wilmslow Road transition.

The brief was to transform the existing amenity
spaces and reception with low ceilings, dated decor
and central courtyard into new sophisticated study and
social environments that responded to the industrial influences
of Northern heritage with the use of red brick, polished concrete,
rich colours and raw materials throughout.
Our biggest challenge was to convince the clients
to relocate the main entrance from the side street
of Hathersage Road to a more prominent location set
amongst the row of shops and cafes of Wilmslow Road.
Through their trust in our proposal, we were able to take
out the unattractive escalators that led to a bland, empty
reception and replace them with a statement hardwood
and steel staircase with integrated amphitheatre dividing
the lower social areas from the upper study spaces.

Phase 2 of the project involved redesigning the external
courtyard and creating a large lounge area, a state of the
art gymnasium a huge study space and creating the new
front door to the building.
The overall impact of the redevelopment has been
enormous. The facilities are amazing and the building
flows from the newly enhanced entrance on Wilmslow Road,
through a series of experiential spaces leading to a variety
of amenity zones which are all interconnected and yet offer
opportunities for seclusion or to come together as groups
to socialise, watch sport, train and study.
